Students in the South Lawrence East Excel Club came together and decided they would like to give back to the Lawrence community. They were concerned about people not having enough food, especially during the holiday season, and having a warm place to sleep. They found out about the House of Mercy and decided that they'd like to help.
The students motivated their 5th grade classmates with incentives of giving back and also of earning extra recess if they raised the most number of items. After a neck-and-neck collection, Ms. Doucette's/Mr. Herring's class (they coteach) won with 331 items raised. Totals for the whole 5th grade were 1,272 cans of food. Great job everyone involved!
They aren't done yet, stay tuned for their next project.
