Reading and writing are near and dear to Sheila Barry's heart. So when she was chosen as Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year, which comes with a $1,000 award, the first thing the Oliver School educator thought of was reopening the school's library, which has been closed for several years for lack of space. Instead, teachers have books categorized and neatly stored on plastic bins.
Lawrence High class offers high tech way to help nonprofits

Any local community or nonprofit group that can't afford to build its own computer web site can have the work done for free by students at the Business Management & Finance High School, on the Lawrence High School campus. Interested nonprofit organizations will have to pay for their domain name and web hosting service. But the students in David Toto's Youth Tech Entrepreneurs class can help arrange that and do the rest of the work at no charge.

A uniform approach to good education

Lawrence Public Schools instituted a uniform policy for their high schools last year, said Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy. The district had a school uniform policy for students from kindergarten to the eighth grade for 11 years before that. Laboy said he a formed committee to examine the issue and they overwhelmingly supported the idea. He said he only wishes he had instituted the policy earlier. Laboy said parents supported the idea. He said the district still gets "push-back" from students on the issue. But he said as a community they decided they wanted to install the policy, and now he's going to stay the course. Laboy recommended such a policy be adopted in Fitchburg and all other communities around the state
Lawrence scholar heads to Phillips Academy, eligible for $150,000

Lopez was among 70 students nationwide selected last fall as a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholar. Upon graduating high school, she will be eligible for more than $150,000 toward college and graduate school tuition through the foundation. Lopez is Lawrence's first-ever participant in the young scholar program, which, since 2002, has given academic guidance and assistance to promising teens in families with low to moderate incomes.

Classes start Tuesday at Lawrence High School, but for some ambitious students, they never stopped. Learning interview skills, writing research papers, and preparing for the SATs, 165 of them spent their summer in class. They gave up their vacations not because they failed a subject or received one too many detentions, but because they want to go to college. College Prep is a seven-week program organized by the Graduate School of Education at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell for Lawrence students committed to advancing their education.

According to an evaluation approved by committee members this month, Laboy met or exceeded expectations on 90 percent of the components of his job. Committee members said the superintendent was especially strong in budget matters, educational leadership and curriculum development.

At the International High School, 11th and 12th grade students provide tutoring to 9th and 10th graders through the Gear Up program.
